Pennsylvania Avenue

The Pennsylvania Avenue commercial corridor has a special place in Baltimore 's history. It was along Pennsylvania Avenue that music greats such as Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway performed. Today, Pennsylvania Avenue is a bustling neighborhood shopping district serving the local community as well as visitors interested in learning more about Baltimore's African-American history and culture.

Vision Statement

In the year 2020, Pennsylvania Avenue is very proud of its African-American cultural and historical legacy. From the Revolutionary War, through the Underground Railroad and the development of jazz, we have made great strides to celebrate our heritage. This neighborhood is a "living library" for students of all ages. Visitors and residents learn much at our museum and cultural center, including an appreciation of music, art, and dance. The Avenue is the premier African-American historic district in Baltimore.

Historical markers, a Walk of Fame, historic parks and signs celebrate the famous people and important moments in the life of The Avenue. Monuments to jazz diva Billie Holiday and the Royal Theater see high numbers of tourists daily. Current entertainment venues allow people to experience music firsthand, including jazz, gospel, R 'n B, blues, hip hop and other contemporary genres. Restaurants' culinary delights add to the flavor of The Avenue. While experiencing our jazz culture, families enjoy staying at our themed jazz suites, where sleeping becomes an experience. A walking tour provides an opportunity to view the homes of the neighborhood's most distinguished people.
